Carers involved with Certitude’s Shared Lives scheme have made a positive choice to become carers for adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs. They welcome people into their homes and families and develop strong bonds which are mutually fulfilling for everyone.
In some cases Shared Lives carers look after people full time – perhaps for several years – and in other cases they might provide respite for family carers by regularly looking after someone at weekends or during the week.
Comments from carers:
“Being a Shared Lives carer is a rewarding job; I get to spend time with different people and am involved in the local community. I enjoy the times I spend with people when they are happy and having fun. The people we support are part of the family, everyone gets on so well and we are very close knit.”
“I have found my experience of respite with a Shared Lives carer to be an invaluable service which has developed into an extended family.”
“I highly recommend Shared Lives carers. They are easy to work with, flexible and I trust them implicitly when they work with my son.”
Certitude Development Director Marianne Selby Boothroyd believes this genuine desire to care is a key factor in the success of Shared Lives :
“People who enjoy caring for others and want to welcome people with additional needs into their homes and families provide a unique kind of care. We are also very proud of the fact that Shared Lives can take the pressure off full time family carers by offering a flexible home from home option.”
