Having a choice matters to me
It’s important to encourage others to make their own choices and help raise awareness of what Down Syndrome is and how people with Down Syndrome play a vital role in our lives and communities. Here, Parvin talks about her experience of “My Voice, My Community”.
“If you don’t know Parvin, she’s always the first one on the dance floor! She’s sociable, independent and loves meeting new people.” Ashlee, Parvin’s Key Worker
My name is Parvin. I enjoy travelling, sightseeing and finding out about different cultures. Last year, I went on a Mediterranean Cruise with Bella (Izabella, House Manager) which was really enjoyable, I had the best time! I got to do a lot of my favourite things including exploring, shopping (I’m a bit of a shopaholic!) and, being the foodie I am, trying local foods which I normally wouldn’t have in the UK. I bought some handmade jewellery which I wear every day – something that reminds me of the trip. I’m currently looking to go on another cruise or visit America this year which Ashlee, my key worker, is getting prices for. Ashlee will then give me a list so I can choose where I would like to visit.
I don’t like being stuck in the house all day so I make sure I go out every day, even if it’s to do some window shopping or going out for a walk – if there’s food and good company then I’m happy! I enjoy going to The Open Session at the ARC with my housemates. I love cooking, especially pasta and rice – YUMMY! I have also been attending the Look Ahead Group for many years where we do activities such as dancing to stay fit and pub quiz nights! I meet up with the rest of my friends here.
I like going to the local leisure centre for swimming and exercise which I go to three times a week. I have recently bought a treadmill for my house so I can use it when I want. I look forward to the weekend as I go to my sister Leila’s house every Saturday – I even stay over for a few days when I want to. I love seeing my nieces and nephews and going to the Mosque. I enjoy watching Leila Forouhar, my favourite singer on my iPad, singing and dancing along with her (nothing to do with her name being the same as my sister’s!).
The best part of my week is going to Impact, a theatre company near where I live. Here, I get to dress up, sing and dance – all the things I enjoy! If I could have any job it would be a Theatre Performer, dressing up (a good excuse to do more shopping) and dancing. I was part of a show last year which I really enjoyed and would love to do again. Ashlee is looking into more dancing and music groups for me to attend. I love spending time with Ashlee.
My love for the theatre also includes shows in the West End. Bina, who also supports me went with me to see the Lion King last year. The performances, costumes, colours, everything brought out my love for the theatre even more. We stayed over at a hotel for the night and visited the Ice Bar and Sky Garden, really showing me what London has to offer. I’m looking forward to my next visit to the theatre!
Most of all, I love being able to make choices about my life. This is really important to me.
