Making a difference
The impact volunteering has is not only on people we support but also volunteers themselves.
As part of Volunteers’ Week we spoke with Sonia who tells us how it has given her the motivation to think about working in social care as a career…
“I have now been volunteering for over a year and have absolutely loved and enjoyed it. A friend of mine who works with people within the charity sector recommended that I volunteer. I wanted to have the experience of working with people with learning disabilities and have always had a passion to do so. I decided to volunteer as it was local and would fit around my other commitments. I enjoy doing what I do – going with people on exciting activities and providing support to staff when needed.
Since starting to volunteer, I have become more aware and more confident in working with different people and have made some really good friends. I feel I have made a difference by supporting both staff and individuals, although I still believe I can learn a lot more through my experiences with Certitude. Volunteering here has given me the motivation to think about working in social care and taking it forward as a career.”
