Never feel like you need to go through all this by yourself

As part of Mental Health Awareness Week we are sharing Letters of Hope from people across Certitude. If you had the chance to go back and tell yourself something when you were struggling with your mental health, what would you say?

Here, Charlie shares his thoughts…

Hello Charlie,

I know you feel alone at the moment and you think no one cares. You are thinking about your friends and wondering how they are doing. We both know you need to speak up about how you are feeling and how unhappy you really are – it’s not good to hold it all in. I know you feel you have to be strong for your family but believe me, deep down you know they will want you to take care of yourself and be there for you. Never feel like you need to go through all this by yourself, speak up, someone will always be there to listen. I wish I could tell you what you need to do to change the way you are feeling but I know you are stubborn and know you wouldn’t listen. The fact is you are desperately in need to talk and stop the chaos that will follow…

I am in a very different place now, an amazing place which I wish you knew about. I am happy, in a really good job and studying to become a counsellor. I know friends are important to you – although many of your friends are married with families now don’t worry; they are still part of your life and will be with you on this journey.

Finally, always remember you are a strong, likeable and a good person. Most of all, I know you think people don’t care but they do, you will see this later on in life. Something to look forward to in the future, a dog!  He will be there to give you company, as a friend and will be there for you when you are not feeling well. You will get on with studies and find studying for counselling an amazing way to find out more about yourself as well as learning how to help others through talking therapy.

Please keep going Charlie and stay strong. Remember The Camino will be an awesome achievement that will be with you always.

Take care.

Love me,

Charlie
